Our Beginning

Yoga Amsterdam was founded with a simple vision: to create a space where people from all walks of life could experience the benefits of yoga without pretence or intimidation. What began as small classes in a rented room has grown into a welcoming community of practitioners.

Our studio, located along one of Amsterdam's most picturesque canals, reflects our philosophy of combining tradition with accessibility. We honour the ancient roots of yoga while making the practice relevant and approachable for modern life.

Our Approach

We believe yoga should adapt to the individual, not the other way around. Our instructors are trained to offer modifications and alternatives, ensuring that each student can participate fully regardless of physical limitations or experience level.

Rather than pushing for perfect poses, we encourage awareness of the body and breath. Progress is measured not by flexibility alone, but by the quality of attention brought to each moment on the mat.

Our Instructors

Each member of our teaching team brings unique expertise and a shared commitment to authentic, accessible yoga instruction.

Marieke de Vries

Lead Instructor

With over fifteen years of practice and a background in physical therapy, Marieke specialises in therapeutic yoga and helping students work with injuries or chronic conditions. She completed her training in India and continues to study with internationally recognised teachers.

Lucas Jansen

Vinyasa Specialist

Lucas brings energy and creativity to his dynamic flow classes. A former professional dancer, he understands movement deeply and creates sequences that challenge while remaining accessible. His classes blend strength-building with moments of stillness.

Anna Bakker

Meditation & Yin

Anna's calm presence defines her teaching style. Trained in mindfulness-based stress reduction and traditional Yin Yoga, she guides students toward deeper relaxation and self-awareness. Her sessions provide a counterbalance to the pace of daily life.

The Studio Space

Our practice room features high ceilings, abundant natural light, and wooden floors that create warmth underfoot. We maintain the space with care, keeping it clean, uncluttered, and peaceful. All necessary equipment — mats, blocks, straps, and blankets — is provided and sanitised regularly.

Changing rooms with showers are available, along with a small lounge area where you can relax before or after class. We encourage arriving a few minutes early to settle in and transition from the outside world.

What Guides Us

Authenticity

We teach yoga as a complete practice, not merely a fitness trend. While physical benefits are real and welcome, we also introduce the breath awareness and mental focus that distinguish yoga from ordinary exercise.

Community

The studio is more than a place to exercise. It is a gathering point for people seeking connection and growth. We foster an atmosphere of mutual respect where students support one another's journeys.

Accessibility

Yoga belongs to everyone. We strive to remove barriers — physical, financial, or psychological — that might prevent someone from experiencing its benefits. Modifications are always available, and we offer reduced rates for those in need.
